Compacts

Compact cameras are the successors of box cameras (so called because of their box-like shape). Those cameras were designed to offer to the general public a convenient way to take pictures.

The first compact cameras were quite simple : a lens, a shutter, and that's it. They became gradually more sophisticated, with rangefinder (see the Rangefinders section), light metering, etc. and became the electronic gizmos of today.
